A wardrobe full of possibility: how a connection inspired a collection drive

Around 150 items of pre-loved workwear. Approximately 50kg of clothing. And a reminder that giving back doesn't have to mean volunteering every week!

Sometimes, all it takes to make a difference is meeting the right person.

For Mary & Katie, that person was Kylie, CEO of Suited to Success, who they met at a River North Community Foundation Northside Networking Night in July.

After hearing Kylie share the story behind Suited to Success, they were inspired by the work and started thinking about all the good-quality workwear sitting unused in people's wardrobes. So - they decided to do something about it.

Over August and September, Mary and Katie rallied colleagues, friends and the wider community to collect pre-loved professional clothing for Suited to Success. Together, they gathered around 150 items of clothing, weighing approximately 50kg. The generosity even continued at the next Northside Networking Night in September, where more people arrived with contributions of their own.

Mary and Katie were both individually navigating wonderful life transitions such as getting married and moving house - but still found time to give!

More than just clothes

Suited to Success helps people overcome barriers to employment by providing access to professional clothing, styling support, interview coaching and other employment assistance.

For someone preparing to enter or re-enter the workforce, having something appropriate to wear can make a real difference. But Suited to Success goes well beyond providing clothes.

When Mary and Katie visited the organisation's Brisbane headquarters to drop off the donations, they got to see this work firsthand.

The space felt more like a professional clothing shop than a traditional charity service. Clients can choose clothing that suits them, with support from volunteer stylists who help them find outfits they feel comfortable and confident wearing.

Mary was particularly struck by the care that goes into the experience. It's not simply about handing someone a bag of clothes. It's about helping people feel valued, prepared and ready to take their next step.

And the care doesn't stop with the clients. Clothing that isn't suitable for Suited to Success is shared through other charity partners wherever possible, helping donated items find a useful second life.

Giving back looks different for everyone

Mary works in a professional industry herself and understands how much presentation and confidence can matter when you're trying to get your foot in the door.

She also knows that not everyone has the time to commit to regular volunteering. But most of us know someone with a wardrobe full of clothes they no longer wear.

For Mary and Katie, this was a practical way to turn their networks into something meaningful. A conversation became an idea, an idea became a collection drive, and a group of people who wanted to help were given a simple way to do so.

It's a lovely reminder that generosity doesn't always require a big commitment. Sometimes it starts with asking a few friends, talking to colleagues or making a connection between people who care about the same things.

The power of a local connection

This is exactly the kind of connection River North Community Foundation exists to help make.

As a place-based community foundation for Brisbane's north and the City of Moreton Bay, River North brings people together, shines a light on the good work happening locally and helps turn awareness into action. Gathering created the opportunity for Mary and Katie to meet Kylie and learn about Suited to Success.

From there, they could see a need, mobilise their own networks and make a practical contribution to an organisation already doing important work in our community.

And that's the beauty of local connection. When we know who's doing good in our own backyard, it's easier to find a way to be part of it.

A huge thank you to everyone who donated clothing, spread the word and helped make this collection possible — and to Kylie and the Suited t

o Success team for the work they do every day to help people move towards employment with confidence.

Together, we can all find a way to give where we live.
